THE BAYLISES

The Baylis Branch of the Welburn Family

Catharine Welburn was born c.1836 in the farming community of Roxana. In her late teens she worked "out in service in Cedar Neck 3 or 4 miles from home" and came home on alternate Sundays. Shortly afterward, Catharine married Millsboro farmer Clement Baylis, a widower and father of 5 children, whose 1st wife Charlotte died in 1857.

Catharine's father, George Welburn, was quite particular about his daughters. According to her sister Maria's deposition, "Father was a very strict man about who should marry his daughters...He made Clem Bailey who married my oldest sister burn his fiddle before he would permit him to marry Catharine." Catharine & Clement eventually moved to Oceanview in the Baltimore Hundred.

There were a total of 6 children born during the marriage. Catherine Welburn-Baylis eluded the census takers in 1900 & 1910, but she did survive until June 6, 1914 when she gave her deposition in Nancy's widow pension case.
