Isaac Alfred Welburn

Isaac Alfred Welburn, and his twin sister Alice Rickards, were born September 12, 1859 in the farming community of Blackwater within the Baltimore Hundred district of Sussex County. He makes his first Federal Census appearance in 1870 at the age of 10.

As evidenced by tax assessment records, Isaac remained in Sussex County at least through 1892 and helped farm the land owned by his parents. Isaac married at least 4 times. His first marriage took place in Pennsylvania in 1895 to Virginia native Mary L. Pollard.  In 1900 while residing with his older brother Thomas in Chester County PA, the Census notes his married status but his wife is not present.

Although no marriage record has been located yet, Isaac married his 2nd wife Mary Denby about 1899 and by 1910 they had relocated to Philadelphia. He worked as a coal yard driver. There were 2 children born during the marriage: Reba Mary Welburn (born 2/3/1900) and Eleanor "Ella" Welburn-McFall (1/1902). There has been mention of a son named Charles Welburn, but he has not been located in Census records and living descendants of Isaac are not familiar with his existence.

Mary Denby-Welburn died in 1914 and their children, Reba & Ella, were placed in the care of their maternal grandmother Arrie Denby. Reba, Ella, and Arrie relocated to Mt. Vernon, Westchester County, NY.

After his second wife's death, Isaac's life becomes a bit confusing. He was already residing with Mary "Mamie" Kershaw at 1505 Kater Street in Philadelphia when they married on 11/17/1915.  By 1920 they moved to Camden County, New Jersey where Isaac purchased a home in Winslow. A son, Elmer (born about 1915) was mentioned in that Census.  According to the 1930 Census, Isaac was still residing in the Albion neighborhood of Winslow with his wife, but also rented a home in Clementon with another "wife" named Mary (born 1890).  Both Isaac Welburns were born in Delaware and listed coalyard laborer as their occupation. The wives however had parents born in different states.

The 1940 Census currently is the last mention of Isaac. He was 80 years old and his legal wife Mary was still residing with him at their home on Cross Keys Road.

Isaac does not appear in the 1950 Census for New Jersey, so it is presumed that he died between 1940 and 1950. The New Jersey death index for that time frame has disappeared, so final details on Isaac's life cannot be provided until a thorough in-person search can be performed at the state archives.
