Martha Elizabeth Welburn-Weldon

Martha Elizabeth Welburn was born April 6, 1854 in the farming community of Blackwater. She is believed to be Mary & George's 10th surviving child and may be the twin of her brother James.  Because the Blackwater community was skipped during the 1860 Federal Census, Martha and the Welburns were not enumerated at that time. However she appears twice in the 1870 Census of Sussex County, Delaware: first, at her parents' home in Roxana and second, in service with her employer Joshua Derrickson of Dagsboro.

She had 2 daughters, Rhoda & Sarah Ellen, prior to marriage which were fathered by Edward Vickers & William Postley, respectively. Neighborhood elder Mary Short deposed that Martha "was first living at home or hired out when she [was] 'catched up' with these children." According to the custom of the time, the girls were raised by their grandparents Mary & George.

Albert Weldon, a widower with 7 children, began to court Martha after his first wife, Jane Williams, died of cancer. They were married December 21, 1875. According to Luke Rickards, Martha's cousin, "I became acquainted with Albert Weldon a year or so after he came here from Maryland." It is suspected that Albert may have been owned by Solomon Weldon of Worcester County, MD. Albert was a veteran of the Civil War, serving alongside his future brother-in-law William Oliver in Company K of the 32nd US Colored Infantry. He was the company cook and was nicknamed "Red-Eyed Jack" because of his allergies.

In the late 1890s, Martha & Albert relocated to Chester County, PA and then eventually settled in Ardmore, PA. There were 6 children born during the marriage. Albert died on May 5, 1902 and Martha passed 0n January 31, 1924.
