Sena Ann Welburn-Tyre

Sena Ann Welburn, the fifth surviving daughter of Mary & George Welburn, was born February 8, 1847 in the farming community of Blackwater.  She first appears in the 1850 Federal Census. To avoid being bounded out by the sheriff as a servant, a teenage Sena resided with her sister Nancy and Bill to assist with their young children. On February 25, 1864, Sena would marry her near neighbor Mitchell Kendal Tyre.

Mitchell, the son of Burton & Nancy Tyre, was born January 6, 1832.  The Tyre family was originally from St. Martin's Neck, Worcester County, Maryland and moved north to the Baltimore Hundred of Sussex County, Delaware in the 1840s when Mitchell was a young boy. Mitchell Tyre is described as a very petite man, standing only 5' 2" in height, weighing no more than 112 lbs., with a yellow complexion and brown eyes. Before marriage Mitchell worked as a oysterman during the late autumn and winter. Afterwards he sharecropped on a 30-acre farm.
